Kua number 8
A west group number, born into the north-east. Strongest in the south-west, most heightened in the south-east.
What Kua 8 is
Kua 8 sits in 艮 Gen, the mountain trigram, in the north-east. Mountain is the classical image of stillness, something that holds rather than moves. The north-east carries a reputation in popular writing as an unlucky direction, which Eight Mansions does not support: it is the favourable seat of four numbers, including this one.
Being in the west group puts you with Kua 2, 6, 7 and 8, so your four favourable directions are South-west, North-west, West and North-east. The other four numbers, 1, 3, 4 and 9, hold exactly the opposite set. There is no overlap at any point on the compass, and that complement is the geometry the whole system runs on.
The four that work, and what each is for
They are not interchangeable, which is the part a list of four directions always loses. The south- west carries 生氣 Success, first of the eight, tied by classical practice to push and to work that gets seen. The north-west carries 天醫 Health, read as rest, recovery and vitality, and it is the one to protect rather than the one to spend.
The west carries 延年 Relationships, the long game and bonds that hold. The north-east is your own seat, 伏位 Stability, quiet rather than striking. A favourable direction used for the wrong purpose is a wasted wall rather than a harmful one, so which room gets which is the question a reading actually answers.
The four that do not, mildest first
The tradition ranks these rather than treating them as one bad half, and the ranking is what makes a compromise possible. The south carries 禍害 Mishaps, the mildest of the four and closer to friction than to anything larger. The east carries 六煞 Setbacks, drift and things not quite landing.
The north carries 五鬼 Conflict, associated with disputes and with effort that meets resistance. The south-east carries 絕命 Instability, most heightened of the eight, where momentum tends to disperse rather than build. None of that forecasts anything about you. It describes ground, and the order tells you which compromise costs least.
If your number came out 5
There are nine numbers and only eight trigram seats, so 5 has nowhere to sit and redirects. On the female calculation basis it redirects to 8, which is why you may have landed here after working out a different number. Nothing about the reading changes. A redirected 8 has the same four favourable directions and the same severity order as any other 8. The original value is kept on the sheet so you can see what happened rather than wonder why your number moved.
What to do with the number
Every home contains all eight directions, so the work is assignment rather than avoidance. A rough sector takes the storage, the corridor, the room nobody settles in. A favourable one earns the desk, the bed and the chair you actually use. The scale of an answer is a chair turned or a headboard moved, never a renovation, and never an instruction about how to live.
Knowing the number is the easy half. The hard half is where the bedroom and the study want the same wall, and that is what a reading is for: it takes your rooms as they are and says which of the eight each one can carry.
Common questions
NotesHow do I know my Kua number is 8?
It comes from your birth year, adjusted to the Li Chun solar boundary rather than to 1 January, and from the calculation basis your chart is read on. On the male basis, Kua 8 comes from birth years including 1947, 1956, 1965, 1974, 1983. On the female basis, from years including 1945, 1948, 1954, 1957, 1963. A birthday in January or early February belongs to the previous year for this purpose, which is the most common reason a number comes out wrong.
Is Kua 8 a good number to have?
No Kua number is better than another. Every one of the eight has exactly four favourable directions and four rough ones, and the two groups are mirror images carrying the same eight designations distributed differently. What differs is which walls work for you, never how many.
Can my Kua number change?
No. It is fixed by your birth year and the calculation basis, and it does not move with the year. Systems that shift your directions annually are a different tradition, and layering the two produces a contradiction rather than a refinement.

Method and sources
The group, the trigram seat, all eight designations and the birth years that produce this number are computed from the same function the readings use, never typed. What each designation tends to mean follows the classical verse listed below.
