Zi Wei Dou Shu and BaZi, which answers what
These are not competing methods with the same output. They organise a life along different axes, which is why practitioners who use both do not treat one as a check on the other.
The axis each one sorts on
BaZi reads a life through five elements in relation to one another. It gives you a day master, counts what is abundant and what is missing across the chart, and describes how the imbalance shows up. Its natural output is a profile: this is how you are built, this is what that costs, these are the decades where it gets easier or harder.
Zi Wei Dou Shu reads a life through twelve palaces, one per area. Career, wealth, the people closest to you, health, travel, and so on. Fourteen major stars are placed across those palaces, and a palace is read by which stars landed in it and how brightly they sit there. Its natural output is a map: this area of your life has this quality.
Which is a different question
That difference is not cosmetic. It decides what each can answer well.
If you want to know why the same pattern keeps arriving across unrelated parts of your life, BaZi is the better instrument. An element imbalance is a single cause with many symptoms, and the reading traces it.
If you want to know about one area specifically, Zi Wei Dou Shu addresses it directly. It has a palace for the question rather than deriving an answer from a general profile.
Where people find each one easier
Some people find element counting abstract. Being told you run short of Water and that this shows up in how you recover is a true statement that can be hard to act on. Those people usually find Zi Wei Dou Shu easier to receive, because it arrives pre-sorted into the parts of life they already think in.
Others find the twelve palaces fragmented, and prefer the single unifying idea a day master gives them.
Neither reaction is wrong. It is a difference in how people prefer information organised.
The practical differences
Birth time. Zi Wei Dou Shu cannot be produced without one. The palaces are placed from the hour, so an unknown time leaves nothing to read. BaZi withholds the hour pillar and continues with three.
What the document looks like. A Zi Wei Dou Shu reading carries an astrolabe, a twelve-palace plan. A BaZi reading carries four pillars and an element count.
Overlap in timing. Both have a decade layer. When the two agree about a period, that agreement is worth more than either statement alone.
The honest version
Neither system checks the other. They are built on different foundations, and treating agreement between them as proof is a mistake in both directions. What they offer is two organisations of the same life, and which one is useful depends on the question you brought.
Common questions
NotesCan I have both done on the same birth details?
Yes, and they will not contradict each other, because they are not answering the same question. One returns an element profile and its timing, the other returns twelve areas of life with stars placed in them. Where they overlap is usually in timing, and agreement there is worth noticing.
Which should I get first?
BaZi or Saju if you want to understand how you are built, since the day master gives you one character to hold onto. Zi Wei Dou Shu if you have a question attached to a specific area of life, because it addresses areas directly rather than deriving them.
Why does Zi Wei Dou Shu need my birth time when BaZi does not?
Because the twelve palaces are placed from the hour. Without it there is no astrolabe to draw at all, which is a harder limit than BaZi has: BaZi loses its hour pillar and keeps the other three.

Method and sources
Both charts are computed with deterministic libraries corrected for true solar time. Zi Wei Dou Shu placements follow the San He school; star natures follow 紫微斗數全書 as distilled in the reference notes.
