What metal is

Metal takes from Earth and gives to Water in the feeding cycle 生. In the checking cycle 剋 it cuts Wood back, and Fire reshapes it.

The idea underneath it is separation. Metal is the element that makes a distinction and then holds it: this counts, that does not. Everything it is associated with, from precision to standards to the ability to end something, comes out of that one function.

Its relationship with fire is worth naming. Fire is the only thing that changes metal’s form, and it does not destroy it. A chart with both is a chart where judgement is repeatedly tested and repeatedly remade.

How it reads in a chart

Metal reads as judgement, precision and the willingness to draw a line: finishing, editing, deciding what is good enough. Classical practice associates it with justice and with the harvest, which is the same idea twice, taking what is ready and leaving the rest.

The two stems are genuinely different. Yang Metal 庚 is unworked and blunt, and its strength is force rather than finish. Yin Metal 辛 is metal that has already been refined, and its strength is exactness. Neither is the more capable one.

Why the season changes the answer

Metal in a metal season is at its peak. In an earth season it is supported, because earth feeds it. In a fire season it is exhausted, and in a wood season it is held back, working on something it can reduce but not get through.

This is where the element on its own stops being useful. Metal with the season behind it is decisive. The same metal with the season against it is the person who can see exactly what should be cut and cannot make the cut. The element is identical in both. The season is not.

Too much metal, and too little

Too much metal, with nothing to soften it, tends to read as a standard applied past its usefulness: things ended early, options narrowed before they were understood. What that chart is often short of is fire, which is what reshapes metal rather than merely resisting it.
