What earth is

Earth takes from Fire and gives to Metal in the feeding cycle 生. In the checking cycle 剋 it contains Water, and Wood works on it.

The word that fits it is holding. Earth is where things stay long enough to become something: the element that does not convert what it receives so much as keep it. That is why it reads as reliability, and also why it is the element most easily mistaken for inertia.

One plain fact sets it apart. Four of the twelve earthly branches carry earth, where every other element has two. Earth is simply more present in the raw material of charts than anything else is.

How it reads in a chart

Earth reads as steadiness, keeping, and being the thing others build on: work with continuity in it, roles where the value is in still being there. Classical practice associates it with trust and with the middle of things, in the sense of what holds a structure together rather than what leads it.

The two stems separate cleanly. Yang Earth 戊 is ground that does not move, and its strength is that it does not. Yin Earth 己 is ground that is worked: it takes an impression, holds what is put in it, and gives something back.

Why the season changes the answer

Earth in an earth season is at its peak. In a fire season it is supported, because fire feeds it. In a wood season it is exhausted, because wood works directly on it, and in a metal season it is resting, giving to metal without being taken apart.

That spread matters more for earth than for most, because earth is so often present. Quantity is not strength. A chart can be full of earth and still have all of it in the wrong season, which is precisely the case a summary of your element will never catch.

Too much earth, and too little

Too much earth with nothing to move it reads as holding past the point of use: arrangements kept because they were already there. What that chart is short of is usually wood, which is the element that breaks ground and gives earth something to hold that is worth holding.

Too little earth is not unreliability. It more often reads as a chart with no settled ground of its own, where things are converted or spent rather than kept, and where the structure has to come from outside.

Why does earth have four animal signs when the others have two?

Because the twelve earthly branches do not divide evenly by five. The Ox 丑, Dragon 辰, Goat 未 and Dog 戌 all carry earth as their principal element, which means earth turns up in a chart more often than any other element does. This page reads the five in a single cycle, so it takes that as the plain arithmetic it is rather than as a claim about earth's rank.

Does an earth element mean I am stubborn?

No. Earth describes holding rather than resisting, and those are different things. A chart heavy in earth tends to be the one others rely on to stay put, which is only stubbornness when the situation called for movement. Whether it did is a question about the chart and the timing, not about the element.
