What wood is

Wood is a position in two cycles before it is anything else.

In the feeding cycle 生 it takes from Water and gives to Fire. In the checking cycle 剋 it works on Earth and is worked on by Metal. Those four relationships are the whole definition. Everything else people say about wood is an attempt to describe what that position feels like from the inside.

The description that survives is direction. Wood is the element that has somewhere to be. It grows toward something, and it does not do well held still.

How it reads in a chart

In a chart that can carry it, wood reads as initiative and forward motion: starting things, growing things, moving toward a plan rather than waiting to be handed one. Classical practice associates it with planning, with beginnings, and with the kind of work where you are the one deciding the direction.

The two stems handle it differently, and the difference is not a matter of strength. Yang Wood 甲 grows in one direction and does not bend easily. Yin Wood 乙 finds its way around whatever is in front of it. Both are wood. Neither is the better version.

Why the season changes the answer

This is the part most element writing leaves out, and it is the part that decides the reading.

An element is not equally itself all year. Wood in a wood season is at its peak. Wood in a water season is supported, because water feeds it. Wood in a metal season is exhausted, because metal cuts it, and wood in an earth season is held back, because it spends its effort on something bigger than it is.

So two people can both have a wood day master and have almost nothing in common, because one has the season behind them and the other does not. The five states are set out further down this page. Classical practice calls this 旺相休囚死, and it is the first thing a reading works out.

Too much wood, and too little

Both ends are readable, and neither is a fault.

Too much wood with nothing to check it tends to read as motion without a finish: several directions at once, plans that start well. What the chart is usually short of in that case is metal, which is what gives wood an edge and an end point.

Too little wood reads differently. It is not passivity. It is more often a chart that moves when something moves it, and does its best work inside a structure someone else has set. That is a real strength in the right role and a real cost in the wrong one.

Which of those is your chart is not something an element page can tell you, because it depends on the season, the other seven characters, and what is currently running. That is what a reading works out, and it is the one question worth taking to one.

Is being a wood element a good thing?

The question does not have an answer on its own, which is the most useful thing to know about it. Wood is not strong or weak by nature. It is strong in a wood or water season and short of support in a metal one, and the rest of the chart decides the rest. Any source telling you an element is lucky has skipped the step that does the work.

Which animal signs are wood?

The Tiger 寅 and the Rabbit 卯 carry wood as their principal element. They are the two earthly branches whose main content is wood, which is a different question from which year you were born in. A person born in a wood year can have very little wood in the rest of their chart.

What is the difference between wood the element and Yang Wood the day master?

Wood is the element. Yang Wood 甲 and Yin Wood 乙 are the two heavenly stems made of it, and either one can be the day master, the single character a whole chart is read against. The element tells you the material, the stem tells you how it behaves.
