What fire is

Fire sits between Wood and Earth in the feeding cycle 生: it takes what wood has grown and turns it into something that settles. In the checking cycle 剋 it works on Metal, and Water works on it.

That last relationship is the sharpest in the whole system. Water is the one thing that answers fire directly and immediately, and a chart with both in quantity is a chart with a real argument running through it.

If wood is the element with somewhere to be, fire is the element that is seen getting there. It converts. Nothing it touches stays in the form it arrived in.

How it reads in a chart

Fire reads as visibility, warmth and expression: work that is witnessed, roles that involve being in front of people, and a temperament that shows what it is doing rather than doing it quietly. Classical practice associates it with recognition and with ritual, both of which are public by nature.

The two stems are not the same. Yang Fire 丙 is the fire everyone can see, which does not choose who it reaches. Yin Fire 丁 is the fire that is directed at something: smaller, sustained, and far more precise about where it goes.

Why the season changes the answer

Fire in a fire season is at its peak. In a wood season it is supported, because wood feeds it. In a water season it is exhausted, and in a metal season it is held back, spending itself on something it can work on but not finish.

That range is why two fire charts can read as opposites. Fire with the season behind it is warm and carries. The same fire with the season against it is the person who has the ideas and cannot get anyone to look. Nothing about the element changed. The month did.

Too much fire, and too little

Too much fire, with nothing holding it, tends to read as output outrunning supply: high visibility, high expenditure, and a chart that spends more than it takes in. What such a chart is usually short of is water, which is what gives fire an edge to work against rather than an audience to burn through.

Too little fire is not coldness. It more often reads as a chart that does the work and is not seen doing it, where the record of what you have done sits some distance behind the fact of it.

Both of those are workable, and which one is yours depends on the season you were born into and the seven characters around your day master, not on the element alone. That is the question a reading is for.

Does a fire element mean I have a temper?

No. That reading comes from taking the name literally, which is the most common mistake made with the elements. Fire describes visibility and expression, not volatility. A chart heavy in fire with nothing to contain it can run hot, but so can a chart with almost no fire in it, for entirely different reasons. The element on its own does not carry the claim.

Which animal signs are fire?

The Snake 巳 and the Horse 午 carry fire as their principal element. That is a statement about those two earthly branches, not about a birth year. Which branches appear in your own chart, and where, is what decides how much fire you actually hold.

Why is fire the element people want most?

Mostly because of how it is marketed. Fire reads as warmth and visibility, which sounds better in a summary than earth or metal do, and that is a fact about English adjectives rather than about charts. In practice a chart wants whatever it is short of, and for a great many charts that is not fire.
