Water

shuǐ

The element that moves and finds out. Water takes from Metal, gives to Wood, answers Fire directly, and is held by Earth.

What water is

Water takes from Metal and gives to Wood in the feeding cycle 生. In the checking cycle 剋 it answers Fire, and Earth contains it.

What it does is move and find the way through. Water does not hold a shape of its own, and that is its function rather than a weakness: it takes the shape of what it is in, goes around what it cannot pass, and gets somewhere by a route nothing else would have taken.

It is also the element that ends the cycle and starts it again. Water feeds wood, which is where the whole sequence begins, so a chart short of water is often short at the source rather than at the finish.

How it reads in a chart

Water reads as intelligence in the practical sense: taking things in, working out how something is put together, and adapting rather than forcing. Classical practice associates it with study, with depth, and with communication, all of which are versions of moving information from one place to another.

The two stems are not interchangeable. Yang Water 壬 is water in volume and in motion, and it goes where it is going. Yin Water 癸 is water that gets in everywhere: quieter, more penetrating, and much harder to keep out.

Why the season changes the answer

Water in a water season is at its peak. In a metal season it is supported, because metal feeds it. In an earth season it is exhausted, held in place by something it cannot move through, and in a fire season it is held back, spending itself on something it can answer but not outlast.

That is the whole reason an element cannot be read alone. Water with the season behind it moves and finds. The same water with the season against it is contained, and the person carrying it experiences that as knowing the way through and not being able to take it.

Too much water, and too little

Too much water, with nothing containing it, reads as movement without a course: adaptable to the point of having no fixed position, taking in more than gets used. What that chart is usually short of is earth, which gives water a bank to run between rather than a wall to stop at.

Too little water is not stupidity, and it is worth saying plainly because the element is so often translated as intelligence. It reads more often as a chart that acts before it has taken enough in, or one that has to be shown a thing rather than working it out from the shape of it.

Which of those is yours is a question about your season and the seven characters around your day master. An element page can tell you what water does. It cannot tell you how much of it you are carrying, or when.

Common questions

Notes
Does a water element mean I am emotional?

That is a translation artefact rather than a reading. Water describes movement, adaptability and the taking in of information, which English tends to file under feeling because those are the words available. A chart heavy in water is more usefully described as one that keeps taking in and moving than as one that feels more than other people do.

Which animal signs are water?

The Rat 子 and the Pig 亥 carry water as their principal element. Those are the two earthly branches whose main content is water, which is not the same question as which year you were born in.

Why is water said to feed wood?

Because in the feeding cycle 生 water is what wood draws on to grow. In a chart that reads as whatever supplies the initiative rather than the initiative itself: information, study, and the backing that makes movement possible. A wood chart with no water is a recognisable pattern, and it is not laziness.

Where water shows up in a chart

Computed · 2 stems · 2 branches

An element is never in a chart by name. It is there as the stems and branches that carry it, and those are the characters you can actually count in your own four pillars.

Water through the five seasons

Computed · 旺相休囚死

The month you were born in commands an element, and that decides how much your own has to work with. Classical practice grades it in five states, and it is the first thing a reading works out. Read down for the month, across for what it does to water.

In a wood month
Resting

it feeds the season, which draws on it without taking it apart

In a fire month
Held back

it checks the season and the season is bigger, so the effort goes nowhere

In an earth month
Exhausted

the season checks it directly, and it has the least to work with

In a metal month
Supported

the season feeds it, so it has more behind it than it brought

In a water month
At its peak

the season is its own element, and it is as strong as it gets

This is one input of several. Seasonal status says what water has behind it, not whether the chart is strong, which also takes the other seven characters into account.

Method and sources

The two cycles, the stems and branches carrying this element, and its status in each season are computed from the same engine functions the readings use, never typed. What the element tends to mean follows the classical texts listed below.
