What the Self palace covers

命宮 is the core temperament: the keynote of a life, and the thing every other palace is read against. Classical practice reads it first and does not read anything before it, because the same star in the same place means something different depending on the character it is sitting with.

That is why a summary of one palace in isolation tells you very little. This one sets the terms.

Read it with Travel opposite it

紫微斗數全書 never reads a palace alone. Every palace faces the one directly across the square, and the pair informs the reading of both.

The Self palace faces 遷移 Travel, which is the wider world and how you meet it. The pairing is the point: who you are and how you are met outside the house you grew up in are two halves of the same question, and classical practice treats one as unreadable without the other.

Its two trine palaces, Career and Wealth, complete what the tradition calls 三方四正: the influence set that reaches this palace from across the chart.

The star supplies the tendency, the palace supplies the subject

A palace is a subject, not a verdict. It says what an area of life is; the stars sitting in it say how that area tends to go.

So the Self palace with 紫微 in it and the Self palace with 破軍 in it are the same question answered two different ways. Neither answer is better. Which stars land here, and how brightly, is what a reading works out, and it is not something a page about the palace can tell you.

When it is empty

A palace with no major star is called 空宮, and it is ordinary rather than a gap. Roughly half a chart’s palaces have no major star in a typical plate.

The rule is to read the empty palace through the stars of the palace opposite it. That reading is borrowed, which makes it indirect and weaker than a star sitting in the palace itself, and an honest reading says so rather than presenting the borrowed answer at full confidence.

Is the life palace the same as the self palace?

Yes. 命宮 is written both ways in English, and this site uses Self on the drawn chart because that is what the calculator and a delivered reading print. Life palace is the older phrasing and appears just as often, so you will meet both and they mean the same cell.

What decides where my life palace lands?

The birth month and the birth hour together. That is why Zi Wei Dou Shu cannot be drawn without a time: the twelve palaces are placed from the hour, and moving the hour moves every one of them.

Does a crowded life palace mean a strong chart?

Not by count. What classical practice weighs is brightness rather than how many stars are present, so one major star at its brightest carries more than three dim ones. A reading looks at which stars are there and how well placed they are, not at the tally.
