Travel 遷移

qiān yí

The wider world, travel, change of place, and how you are met when you step outside. The palace directly facing the Self.

What the Travel palace covers

遷移 covers the wider world and how you meet it: travel and change of place in the literal sense, and more broadly the experience of being somewhere you are not already known.

The subject is the transition itself. What happens when you leave familiar ground, how readily you go, and how you are received when you get there.

Read it with Self opposite it

This palace faces 命宮 Self, and that makes it the most load-bearing pairing on the square.

命宮 is who you are; 遷移 is how that is met outside. Classical practice reads the Self palace first and then immediately reads this one, because a temperament that works beautifully at home and badly among strangers is a different chart from one that does the reverse, and the Self palace alone cannot tell them apart.

It is also the practical reason this palace matters more than its name suggests: where the Self palace is empty, the tradition reads it through the stars sitting here.

Its trine palaces, Spouse and Fortune, complete the 三方四正 influence set.

The star supplies the tendency, the palace supplies the subject

The palace names the subject, the star names the tendency and its brightness says how strongly.

An outward star here reads as someone who gains from movement; a more inward one reads as someone for whom leaving costs more. Neither is a better chart, and both are ordinary.

When it is empty

空宮 here is common and unremarkable. It is read through the Self palace opposite, borrowing those stars.

The borrowed reading is genuinely weaker than a star in place, which is why a careful reading marks it as indirect rather than presenting it at full confidence. Where both a palace and its opposite are thin, the honest answer is that the chart says less about that area than about others.

Your own placement follows from your birth hour, and the free chart shows it.

Common questions

Notes
Does this palace mean I will move abroad?

It reads a tendency toward movement and how you fare away from familiar ground, not a relocation forecast. Plenty of charts with an active travel palace describe someone who is simply more themselves among strangers than at home, which has nothing to do with a passport.

Why is the travel palace so important?

Because it faces the Self palace, and the tradition reads every palace with the one across from it. That makes 遷移 the second half of the chart's most important question, and it is why an empty Self palace is read through this one.

What does travel mean if I stay put?

Meeting the outside, in whatever form that takes. New rooms, unfamiliar people, situations where nobody already knows who you are. The palace reads the transition rather than the mileage.

What reaches Travel from across the chart

Computed · 三方四正

A palace is never read alone. The one directly opposite informs it, and two more reach it from across the square at a hundred and twenty degrees. Together those four cells are its influence set, and a star transformed in any of them is felt here.

At this level the triangle is used lightly, mainly to notice when a palace is reinforced from across the chart. It is not turned into a full geometric audit.

Method and sources

The order of the twelve, the palace opposite this one and its two trine palaces are computed from a chart drawn by the same engine the readings use, never typed. What each palace covers follows the classical text listed below.
