What Companion is

Every stem in your chart stands in one of ten relations to your day master, and those relations are the ten gods. They are decided by two things and nothing else: whether the other stem’s element is the same as yours or one you generate, control, are generated by or are controlled by, and whether its polarity matches yours.

Companion is the simplest of the ten. Same element, same polarity. Another of exactly your kind, standing somewhere else in your chart.

How it reads

The core of it is peers, self-reliance, and holding your ground. Companion describes someone accustomed to operating alongside equals rather than above or below them, which classical practice associates with teamwork, self-employment and the trades.

With money it reads as resources that get shared or split rather than accumulated alone. In how you relate to people, it is the register of friendship and equality: the people in your life who stand at the same height as you.

None of that is a prediction about a particular person or a particular job. It is a description of a tendency, and where in your chart the Companion sits changes how loudly it speaks. A god in the year pillar colours early life and the wider world; in the month it sits at the career engine; in the day branch it touches your closest bonds; in the hour it belongs to later life and what you make.

Why the same god reads two ways

This is the part most short explanations leave out, and it matters more than any single meaning above.

A ten god has no fixed flavour. Companion in a chart that needs support reads as exactly that, a reinforcement, someone to stand with. The same Companion in a chart already crowded with its own element reads as competition for the same air: too many people wanting the same thing, resources divided rather than doubled.

Same relation, opposite reading. What decides it is the balance of the whole chart, which is why no reference page can tell you whether your Companion is helping or crowding you, and why a reading spends its time on that question rather than on the definitions.

Is Companion the same as having a strong day master?

No, though they often arrive together. Strength is a judgement about the whole chart, made from the season, the support and what is draining it. Companion is one relation that happens to add to that judgement. A chart can carry two Companions and still read weak if the month is against it.

Does Companion mean I work well in teams?

It reads as the presence of equals, which is not the same as harmony with them. Classical practice places it with teamwork, self-employment and the trades, and the honest version is that it describes someone used to standing at the same level as the people around them, whether that is comfortable or competitive.

How is it different from Rival?

Only by polarity. Both are your own element, so both read as a peer. Companion matches your polarity and behaves like you; Rival opposes it and comes at the same thing from the other side. That single difference is why one reads as steadiness and the other as drive.
