What Output is

Output is the element your day master generates, in the same polarity. Wood makes fire; a Yang Wood day master’s Output is Yang Fire. It is the first of the ten gods that points outward: not something acting on you, but something coming out of you.

The five elements generate in a fixed cycle, and this relation is that cycle read from your own position. Whatever your day master feeds, that is your Output.

How it reads

The theme is making, expressing, and enjoying. Appetite in the broad sense: for food, for company, for the process of producing something. Classical practice places it with craft, with food, with the arts and with care work, all of which have in common that the doing is part of the reward.

With money it reads as earned through creation and built slowly rather than won. In how you relate to people it is warmth and the instinct to provide for others.

Where it sits changes its weight. In the hour pillar, the position that belongs to later life and to what a person makes, Output is at home.

Why the same god reads two ways

Output costs the day master something, and that is the hinge.

A strong day master with somewhere to put its energy finds Output a healthy outlet: the chart has more than it needs and this is the channel. The making is genuinely easy.

A weak day master finds the same Output draining. The energy leaves faster than it can be replaced, and what should feel like ease feels like depletion instead.

Same relation, opposite reading. Which one applies is a judgement about the balance of your whole chart, made from the season you were born into and everything standing around your day master.

Why is it called the Eating God?

The classical characters name appetite directly, and the association is with food, enjoyment and being provided for. It is one of the more literal names in the set and one of the least misleading, but "Output" says the mechanism in a word: this is the element your day master produces rather than one that acts on it.

Is Output the creative one?

It is one of the two output gods, and the gentler of them. Output makes because making is satisfying. Performer, its opposite-polarity twin, makes because it wants to be seen. Both are creative; they differ in what the creating is for.

Can having Output mean I am lazy?

No, and that reading comes from confusing ease with idleness. It describes work that does not feel like force, which is a different thing from an absence of work. What it does cost is energy: output draws from the day master, so a chart already stretched thin feels it.
